Sundrop Farms

Sundrop Farms, Australia, 2015

200.000m2

Sundrop Farms is a leader in sustainable horticulture for the arid world; growing high-value crops using seawater and sunlight.

The Sundrop System concentrates the power of nature. They use a combination of proven technologies in a carefully controlled way to enhance what nature provides us every day. They harvest solar power to supply them with the energy they need. Hydroponic greenhouses are used to increase the vigour of plants that they grow. Desalination is used to create the fresh water they need to irrigate their crops.

Instead of extracting groundwater at unsustainable rates, they produce fresh water from seawater. Sundrop don’t consume fossil fuels to control the climate in our greenhouses, but rather the sun’s abundant energy. Also, they can locate their greenhouses on degraded land and in arid climates, which typically would not be considered suitable for agriculture, let alone horticulture. Through this efficient use of land, Sundrop Farms conserve valuable farmlands and soil.
